Who We Are
Sharks & Mermaids’ approach to swim is safety first with fun. Each swimmer learns differently and yet if they aren’t enjoying their time in the water they will never become self sufficient swimmers. A strong swimmer feels comfortable in the water, and learning to be just that needs to be done playfully.
Using a blend of Red Cross water safety instruction methodology, research and over 25 years of experience, Sharks & Mermaids creates a unique lesson for each student. When students are enjoying themselves in the water, their muscles are relaxed. From there they can learn to create movements and use techniques that are suitable for aquatic mobility.
Founder, Daria Makuch, started her lifeguarding and swim instructor life at age 15 when she got certified as a lifeguard. She worked with the City of Glendale, CA, for ten summers where she not only taught swimming, was a lifeguard, but also trained Jr. lifeguards, helped run trainings for all of the lifeguards, and managed a pool facility. She has been teaching privately throughout the years. Daria loves to see her student excel! What a joy it is to help scared swimmers, young or old, find their confidence in the water to be strong and safe sharks or mermaids.

Pool Noodles
Pool noodles are super versatile. They can assist little swimmers get used to something other than a person physically holding them while they swim. It can help not yet confident but able swimmers have a little help staying afloat as they get all their motor skills and breathing perfected. It can help any person of any age float with more ease. They are also fun to play around with in the pool or beach!
Floating Animals
Floating swim animals are great for little swimmers! They get kids excited to move around in the water as you kick or scoop to get them. These animals blow bubbles under water and fill up with water, which encourage swimmers to blow bubbles. They are wonderful to keep swim time fun and playful.

Rings are more than diving toys. They can be steering wheels for your imaginary aquatic vehicle. They are also essential if you're going to practice those big strong arms with a noodle.
Swim vest
If you must put a floaty on your little swimmer, these kinds are the best ones. You need a swim vest that allows your little swimmer to be able to swim in a horizontal position and use their arms and legs. These come in different colors and are made of a super comfortable foam that makes them more enjoyable to wear.
