About Sharks & Mermaids
Who We Are
Sharks & Mermaids is all about making swimming, water safety, and aquatic education safe, fun, and approachable for everyone. With more than 25 years of swim instruction experience, founder Daria Makuch combines proven water-safety techniques with a playful, individualized approach that helps swimmers of all ages become more comfortable, capable, and confident in the water.
Every swimmer learns differently. Our approach is safety first, with plenty of fun along the way. Through private swim instruction, swimmers develop practical skills for aquatic mobility, breathing, floating, swimming, and making safer choices around the water.
Daria began lifeguarding and teaching swimming at age 15. She later worked for the City of Glendale, California, where she taught swimming, worked as a lifeguard, trained junior lifeguards, assisted with lifeguard training, and managed a pool facility. She has continued teaching private swim lessons for more than 25 years, working with children and adults at many different skill levels.
Sharks & Mermaids has now grown beyond the pool. Daria created Sharks & Mermaids Swim Smart, an educational television show that combines swimming and water-safety education with fun facts about sharks, whales, manatees, and other aquatic animals. The program airs on public-access television in West Hollywood, California, and episodes are also shared on YouTube so families and swimmers can watch from anywhere.
The Sharks & Mermaids YouTube channel also features practical swimming tips and demonstrations for parents, young swimmers, and adult learners—from breathing, kicking, floating, streamlining, and treading water to recognizing hazards and developing safer habits around pools, beaches, and open water.
Through swim lessons, educational videos, television, and original water-safety songs, Sharks & Mermaids has one goal: to help create stronger, smarter, safer swimmers—one shark and mermaid at a time. 🦈🧜♀️💙
